QOTD – a whole week of different stuff but definitely some bubbly. Also how about a good selection of wines to drink with people that are not that into wine to get them started, and excited, and “Change the wine world”

  • life’s too short…

Nice one, dewd. QOTD: Structure vs. Flabby. Do the whole smack down thing between a wine that you think is flabby/all over the place, and one that has a little “bite” to it. I love the fruitbombs, but often I want something tighter, something with dusty tannins; something that goes really well with food. That’s why the Terlato you tasted before sounded so intriguing: part olde world, part new. Cool! I think your description of this comparison would really help people get that.

Also, maybe try comparing different methods of saving wine. I’m always looking for short stuff because I (or my wife and I) don’t want to knock off a whole bottle. They have the pumps, and the can of stuff, and using an empty half bottle to save half the bottle by pouring it in right off the bat. But, if others are like me at all, they’ve wasted a lot of solid wine because it didn’t last (for a variety of reasons). Oh, and a strong reason to drink whites, at points. I left a New Zealand S. Blanc in the fridge for 3.5 weeks recently. Came back, opened it, it was wonderful.

    k, i’m out. Cheers.

Great show, I loved the energy! I’ve been wanting to try a pavie more than anything in the world but after that description, i’m not sure. As far as the QOTD, I was thinking maybe standout wines from regions people don’t know of or think about like Joven in spain, Puglia in Italy, or Adelade in Australia. There’s tons more those were just the examples I could come up with. Or maybe like a Primitivo vs. Zinfandel (or other genetically related grapes)episode. i’ve got more ideas, i’ll have to check back in later. thanks for all you do for us Gary!

THANK YOU for choosing to review the Truchard after I suggested it for a third straight viewer’s choice! I will now watch the Conan video and chew some cigars and dirt along w/ you guys as thanks. Glad you liked it…I tried it a bit ago, and I wanted to see how our palates compared. I picked up basically most of what you did, but missed the sashimi on the nose (when I think of the wine, I remember that I loved the black and bell pepper combo w fruit and the dry finish).

QOTD – how about some love for your home state and do a “NJ wines” show? Or perhaps the same winery but german rieslings that are kabinett/spatlese/auslese? Personally, when I get a riesling I just end up going cheap w/ the QbA level…but maybe we all can learn something.

Building on the last comment, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you do German riesling at the auslese level… maybe do a show with nothing but auslesen, perhaps even all from 2005! That would probably result in some serious thunder!

Good to hear that you’ll be doing a sherry episode. I’ve never had it, but have been curious about it lately.

    QOTD:

    1. A CdP/Gigondas/Vacqueyras Episode.
    2. Since I asked for one last Friday, and you reminded me, Lopez De Heredia. This producer really intrigues me.
    3. Bierzo
    4. Ok, this one is a little different and I will leave it to you to interpret. I once told someone that I like wines that are like “women in film noir: elegant, alluring, demure, difficult, mysterious, elusive.”

    Gary,
QOTD – I want to see the grape that got me into wine. I had a mystery bottle on a train from Berlin to Zurich. I don’t know the producer, but that bottle is the one that got me hooked. I’d love to see Spatburgunder as a theme.
    Keep it up. -Jim

    Hi Gary.

When I get leftover wine, I sometimes freeze it in small plastic bags. That way, I can use it for cooking later on. Quite convenient to have bags with a few deciliters in them.

However, I have never tried to drink it. But it works fine for cooking.

Killer week Gary! Take some time and enjoy the family this weekend.

QOTD: It has come to my attention that my knowledge of Spain is incomplete, so I’d love a recap the the really great wines (that are often bargains too) from that country – Ribera del Duero, Tempranillo, Priorat, etc.

Sherry – yes Bubbles – yes Port – yes

And maybe for all the PN fans a “best of Oregon, Cali, NZ, Burgundy battle” Really compare/contrast the effects of terroir.

There are a lot of good selections and a few silly ones. I second the idea of a “Pirate tasting and a Viking tasting” whatever that means.

    Have a great weekend.

  • Great Friday show Gary, nice way to end the week and get the weekend started!!

    QOTD: Wine Themes

    1. wine pairings for vegetarians!
Everyone always says “this red would be great with steak” or “this white would be good with fish”, but my wife and I are both vegetarians. We love all kinds of wine- old world, new world, fruity and poopy. So what pairs best with tofu????
    2. Lot or site variation
We have seen differences from wines from the same winery, same vintage just different lot, that may only be steps away. It would be good if you could find a winery that produces more than 2 separate lots from each vintage, especially if they are really close ie on the same property, not in another county or something.

    Have an awesome weekend.

GV- I was going to go with Denise as your #1 fan but after the “sweep the leg Johnny” reference I got to go with myself. Karate Kid and wine. I wonder what Ralph Machio’s drinking these days.

Gary, I don’t know if this is worth 10 cents, I might owe you some change, but here it is:

    1) Screw answering emails all weekend. That takes leisure time away from your fam. Chill with them for awhile. That’s where it’s at. And anyone who would get upset at you for not answering his or her (or in Kahuna’s case, what’s 😉 ) emails, is not a true VAYNIAC!

    2) Theme: You have this great CAS going on. How about tasting some wines from that for us that have yet to have your stamp of approval?

    Now go enjoy your weekend.

  • Theme: Silence Of The Lambs!

First: A Chianti, as in, “I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.”

Second: An Amarone, because the line about Chianti was originally about Amarone in the book. It was changed because most movie goers wouldn’t know what an Amarone is. And they also wouldn’t know that Chianti might not be the best wine pairing with organ meat!

Third: Chateau d’Yquem, which Hannibal Lecter gives to Agent Starling as a gift.
